Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Luta Livre and Catch Wrestling
Flow Grappling specialises in submission grappling, combining the technical principles of three established grappling disciplines.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu develops ground-fighting skills, positional control, escapes, transitions and submission techniques. Students learn how to manage different positions, defend against attacks and create opportunities to control or submit an opponent.
Luta Livre Esportiva
Luta Livre is a Brazilian submission wrestling discipline with a strong emphasis on no-gi grappling. It combines takedowns, positional control, ground transitions and submission attacks, making it a valuable part of a well-rounded grappling education.
Catch Wrestling
Catch Wrestling is a traditional wrestling-based grappling style known for its emphasis on takedowns, control, pinning awareness and submission holds. It contributes a strong wrestling foundation to our approach to submission grappling.
Together, these disciplines provide students with a broad technical foundation and the opportunity to develop a versatile, adaptable grappling game.
Our Hybrid Grappling System
At Flow Grappling, our training philosophy is built around technical principles rather than relying on a single style or set of techniques.
We combine wrestling, positional control, submission awareness and effective transitions into an integrated approach to grappling. The objective is to help students understand not just how a technique works, but when and why to use it.
Our system is grounded in the following principles.
1. Submission-Focused Grappling
All submission holds are part of our technical approach to grappling.
We study submissions from a variety of positions, including standing exchanges, top positions and bottom positions. Students learn how to recognise opportunities, apply submissions with control, defend against attacks and transition between techniques.
The ultimate objective is to develop the ability to create and recognise submission opportunities while maintaining sound positional awareness.
Training methods and permitted techniques are adapted to the class, training partner and relevant safety requirements.
2. Wrestling Is the Foundation
Wrestling is a fundamental part of our hybrid grappling system.
Developing the ability to take an opponent to the ground, maintain control, defend against takedowns and return to a standing position are core grappling skills.
Students work on techniques such as:
- Single-leg and double-leg takedowns.
- Low single-leg takedowns.
- Arm drags and positional entries.
- Takedown defence and standing control.
- Ground transitions and positional escapes.
- Maintaining top position while remaining aware of submission threats.
These skills help connect standing wrestling and ground grappling into one continuous technical system.
3. Positional Control and Ground Awareness
Our approach places considerable emphasis on achieving and maintaining effective positions without becoming vulnerable to submissions.
Top position is generally preferred when it provides effective control and creates opportunities to advance or attack. However, positional dominance should never come at the expense of submission awareness.
Students also learn to use bottom positions intelligently, whether defending an attack, escaping a disadvantageous position or creating an immediate opportunity to counterattack.
Understanding when to defend, when to escape and when to attack is an essential part of developing a complete grappling game.
4. Escapes and Immediate Counterattacks
Being caught in a disadvantageous position is an opportunity to develop essential defensive skills.
Our training includes positional escapes, defensive movement, recovery of position and the ability to transition from defence back into offence.
Rather than simply escaping and resetting, students learn to recognise opportunities to counterattack as soon as a position is recovered.
This approach develops a more active, connected style of grappling in which defence, movement and offence work together.
5. A Connected Approach to Standing and Ground Grappling
We favour guard systems and ground positions that allow students to apply wrestling principles, create movement and develop attacking opportunities.
Techniques such as arm drags, leg attacks, positional transitions and control of an opponent’s centre of gravity help connect standing exchanges with ground grappling.
The goal is to develop a cohesive technical approach in which takedowns, positional control, escapes and submissions complement one another.
